Recognizing one year of COVID-19—a statement from Regional Chair John Henry and all local Mayors

Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer; and the Mayors of the Town of Ajax, Township of Brock, Municipality of Clarington, City of Oshawa, City of Pickering, Township of Scugog, Township of Uxbridge and Town of Whitby:

“Today, we mark the National Day of Observance for COVID-19—one year since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Flags at all Regional and municipal facilities will be lowered to half-mast to honour those who have lost their lives to COVID-19.

As of today, there have been more than 12,200 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Durham Region, with more than 300 lives lost to this terrible virus.

While this has been the toughest year in Durham Region’s history, the strength and resilience of our community has shone through the brightest.

Our front-line and essential workers remind us every day what true heroism looks like. The sacrifices and bravery they continue to show serves as a constant inspiration.

With Durham Region’s vaccination strategy underway, our efforts turn to restoration and recovery. But we must hold firm in the meantime. We must remain hopeful. And we must never forget those who we have lost.

It is crucial to continue to make informed decisions that protect the safety of yourself, family, friends and neighbours.

There is a light at the end of this long tunnel. Together, we will get through to the other side.
