Region of Durham celebrates National Housing Day
Whitby, Ontario – Affordable, accessible and suitable housing is essential for healthy communities, and strong and vibrant neighbourhoods. In honour of National Housing Day, The Regional Municipality of Durham recognizes leaders in the housing industry—those whose contributions support access to affordable housing.
Dr. Hugh Drouin, Commissioner of Social Services presented the 2018 Award of Recognition for Affordable Housing to Tim Neeb, President of Mahogany Management, which developed Ritson Residence, a 75-unit affordable building for seniors in Oshawa; and Patti Bell, Director of Operations for the Durham Region Non-Profit Housing Corporation, which owns and manages more than 1,100 apartments and townhouses across Durham Region. The corporation also oversees a new 18-unit affordable housing building for seniors in Beaverton.
“Affordable housing is integral to Durham’s future,” said Drouin. “These awards exemplify the valuable work being done to address the need for more affordable rental and seniors’ housing. We commend Tim and Durham Region Non-Profit Housing Corporation for their commitment and dedication; and the difference that they are making in our communities.”
To celebrate this day, the Region also released the first in a series of videos showcasing why being at home in Durham matters—to a young person starting out, a family, a senior about to retire, or a service provider. Following the initial trailer, five additional installments will be available.
“At any point in our lives, we or a loved one may be in need of more affordable housing,” said Drouin. “The At Home in Durham video series helps put a face to this complex issue. As the late Roger Anderson, former Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer said, ‘No one in Durham Region should go to bed at night without a roof over their head.’ Awareness and understanding are the first steps in helping us achieve this goal.”
At Home in Durham, the Durham Region Housing Plan 2014-2024, reinforces the Region’s commitment to ending homelessness in Durham; and ensuring affordable rent and greater housing choice for everyone. By working in partnership with local area municipalities, private organizations, industry, non-profit agencies, and other levels of government, the Region is considering new approaches and innovative solutions to address the need for more affordable rental housing and seniors’ housing choices. In 2019, At Home in Durham will undergo a five-year review, resulting in a renewed vision for affordable housing and ending homelessness in our region.
