Region of Durham celebrates National Indigenous Peoples Day
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“Today (June 21) is National Indigenous Peoples Day—an opportunity for Canadians to recognize the fundamental contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples, which have profoundly shaped our past, and continue to shape our present and future.
On this day, we join Indigenous Peoples in celebrating their traditions and heritage. We respectfully acknowledge the territories on which we live and work, as well as the treaties that govern this land. And we commit to supporting the preservation of Indigenous cultures, languages and ways of knowing and doing in Durham Region and beyond.
We need to create spaces for healing and there is still work to be done to improve access for Indigenous Peoples and address the gaps that exist within our current systems. We must commit to listening, learning and moving forward with reconciliation in our hearts, minds and actions.
In recognition of this occasion, the Every Child Matters flag was raised at Regional Headquarters and will fly until June 25.
Today and beyond, please join me in celebrating the contributions and resilience of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples, and offer gratitude for their continued stewardship of this land.”
