Region of Durham celebrates Pride Month
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“Tomorrow (June 1) marks the beginning of Pride season in Canada. Here in Durham Region, we are proud to recognize Pride Month; to champion equity and celebrate the ongoing and positive contributions of Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (2SLGBTQI+) communities.
Safe and inclusive communities are built on respect. They recognize the value of diversity, promote unwavering acceptance for all—regardless of gender expression, gender identity or sexual orientation—and advocate for equal rights to build a future free from discrimination.
This is a milestone year for Pride in Durham Region, as Pride Durham is celebrating 20 years of supporting 2SLGBTQI+ individuals and communities, through education, empowerment and social engagement opportunities that promote unity.
In honour and support of 2SLGBTQI+ communities in Durham Region, and around the world, we will proudly raise the Intersex-Inclusive Progressive Pride Flag at Regional Headquarters this morning (May 31).
Pride Month celebrations will continue throughout June, including the June 22 Youth Pride Durham event, taking place at Regional Headquarters (605 Rossland Road East, Whitby). I encourage residents to join us from 1 to 4 p.m., for this safe, inclusive celebration for 2SLGBTQI+ youth, children and their friends and families.
