Region of Durham celebrates the official opening of the Orono Depot expansion
Whitby, Ontario – The Regional Municipality of Durham, Works Department today celebrated the official opening of the new Orono Depot—one of the Region’s five maintenance operations depots. The new 20,500-square-foot building expands the original facility at the same location, and is anticipated to provide excellent maintenance operations services to the Municipality of Clarington.
“The past few decades have been a period of rapid growth in Clarington, and with that an increased demand to maintain a growing inventory of Regional roads and water and sewer systems in an effective manner,” says Susan Siopis, Commissioner of Works. “I’m pleased to celebrate the completion of this major expansion at the Orono Depot, which ensures our maintenance operations staff have the home base they need to provide the best service for Clarington residents.”
The original Orono Depot was a small facility with seven garage bays, a single 400-square-foot office and one small vehicle and equipment repair bay. With this expansion, the Orono Depot now has expanded offices and two new vehicle and equipment bays (one of which is equipped with a 75,000-pound hoist), which will substantially enhance the abilities of the fleet mechanics to service more and larger vehicles. The maintenance garage services 28 different vehicles and six pieces of heavy equipment, in addition to the numerous trailers and miscellaneous equipment.
The Orono Depot staff maintains 370 kilometers of roads, as well as the water and sewer infrastructure, in the communities of Courtice, Bowmanville, Newcastle, Newtonville, Blackstock and Caesarea. Regional road maintenance includes snow clearing, roadside grass cutting, ditch drainage and pothole repairs. Water/sewer maintenance includes the repair of leaking watermains, fire hydrants, water meters, maintenance hole covers, blocked sewer connections and basement flooding.
