Region of Durham commits $13.25 million to build affordable rental housing
Whitby, Ontario – There is an urgent need for affordable rental housing. To help address this need, the Region of Durham is committing $13.25 million to support the construction of three affordable rental housing complexes.
This funding comes via the Region’s At Home Incentive Program (AHIP), which encourages the development of new affordable rental housing through funding and priority planning services.
Muslim Welfare Canada will receive $5,750,000 to build 55 units of affordable seniors rental housing at 1589-1603 Highway #2 East, Courtice, in the Municipality of Clarington. The proposed development will consist of a five-storey, 100-unit seniors’ building, which will be integrated with a proposed long-term care home. The project will include 55 affordable units, including one, two and three-bedroom units; half of the proposed units will be accessible for those using mobility devices, including wheelchairs and scooters. Common areas will be accessible.
1465 King Street Inc. (The Vale Residences) will receive $4,812,000 to build 70 affordable rental units within a new 320-unit mixed rental development at 1465 Highway #2 East, in Courtice. The project will consist of two buildings. A proposed 10-storey building will provide 174 units, 39 of which would be one-bedroom affordable units; a proposed seven-storey building would provide 146 units, with 31 one- and two-bedroom affordable units.
Borelia Cooperative Homes Inc. will receive $2,688,000 to build 16 units of affordable rental housing at its existing property, located at 10 Borelia Crescent, Port Perry, in the Township of Scugog. The proposed 16-unit, one-bedroom Rent-Geared-to-Income development will consist of four new two-storey fourplex buildings. It includes expansion of a surface parking area on a vacant portion of the site. Each one-bedroom unit will be more than 600 square feet, with half of the units proposed as accessible.
This is the third Call for Applications for At Home Incentive Program funding. The previous two Calls for Applications led to $17.7 million in funding, collectively, to help create 209 new affordable rental units in Ajax, Oshawa, Pickering, Uxbridge and Whitby.
