Region of Durham recognizes National Indigenous History Month

Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:

“National Indigenous History Month (June) is a time to recognize the rich and diverse history of Indigenous Peoples; focusing on the continued stewardship of the lands and waters we reside on.

It is a time for all Canadians to renew relationships with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples based on the recognition of rights, respect and partnership.

This month is an opportunity to reflect on Indigenous cultures. To learn more about and recognize the contributions, achievements and resilience of the First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples who have shaped the country that we have the privilege to call home.

As Canadians, we renew our commitments to learning from, and listening to the stories of, Indigenous Peoples and supporting Indigenous culture and language revitalization. Together, we can help build stronger relationships and inclusive communities for all.  

To engage in the journey toward reconciliation, we must commit to actively acknowledging Indigenous Peoples’ rights; address injustices in our systems and move forward in our actions to decolonize current systems and support Indigenization efforts through action plans focused on systemic change.

This month and beyond, I encourage residents to listen to deepen their understanding of the experiences of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples. To recommit to learning deeper meanings about the stories, scientific advancements and histories of Indigenous communities. By moving together, we can help create a space of healing and gratitude for one another.
