Region of Durham reflects on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“Today (September 30) marks the fourth National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. On this day, we memorialize the children who never returned home, and honour survivors of the residential school system, their families and communities, who continue to be impacted by systemic injustices affecting Indigenous Peoples.
In Durham Region, we are committed to tangible actions on our pathway to reconciliation. To strengthening relationships with Indigenous communities. To embracing Indigenous cultures. To building a community where Indigenous expertise and perspectives are sought and prioritized throughout decision making. And to creating spaces of healing and gratitude for one another.
On September 20, Durham Region hosted a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Awareness Walk, which started with an opening ceremony at the Pathway to Reconciliation Crosswalk at Durham Regional Headquarters in Whitby. Today, the Every Child Matters flag will be flown at half-mast, and this evening, Regional Headquarters will be illuminated orange. Flags at all Regional facilities will also be flown at half-mast in observance.
This effort is ongoing and requires changes in our daily habits. We continue to encourage, provide resources to support, and commit to actions toward reconciliation across Durham Region.”
