Region of Durham reminds residents to be prepared for emergencies this spring
Whitby, Ontario – The Durham Emergency Management Office (DEMO) reminds residents to be prepared for emergency situations this spring, such as the potential for flooding caused by melting snow or heavy rains—which can result in hazardous driving conditions, issues in and around your home, and increased water levels in local bodies of water. Please contact your local conservation authority for information on flood forecasting and warnings.
When: Emergencies can happen at any time, so it’s important that you are always ready.
Where: Emergency preparedness begins at home.
Why: Education and preparedness are your best defense for reducing the impact of an emergency situation. The Region and its local area municipalities have emergency plans and programs in place. However, your own disaster planning is also essential.
Residents are encouraged to keep their at-home and vehicle emergency kits stocked. For more details about what should be included in your kits, or additional information related to personal emergency preparedness, please visit durham.ca/demo.
Get your copy of the “Are You Ready?” brochure, which contains valuable tips on personal preparedness, by downloading it online at durham.ca/demo, emailing demo@durham.ca, calling 1-800-372-1102 ext. 2792, or picking it up in person at the Region of Durham Headquarters (605 Rossland Road East in Whitby).
Note: To access updated information and instructions during an emergency, residents are reminded to monitor local media, and official government websites and social media channels.
