Region of Durham wins two OPWA Project of the Year awards
The Region of Durham’s innovative Newtonville Road (Regional Road 18) Rehabilitation Project was recently awarded the Ontario Public Works Association (OPWA) 2022 Project of the Year Award in the Transportation, less than $2 million category.
Newtonville Road, in the Municipality of Clarington, was the location for an innovative project that used recycled materials in road construction. The first phase of the project was completed using conventional road rehabilitation methods and materials. The second phase of the project used recycled materials from blue box collections. This project is the first of its kind undertaken by The Regional Municipality of Durham and was made possible by the Canada Community-Building Fund. For more information, visit durham.ca/newsroom.
The Region of Durham was also awarded the OPWA 2022 Project of the Year Award in the Structures, less than $2 million category for the Micro-home Supportive Housing Project. The Region worked with NRB Modular Solutions to develop the design and layout of 10 modular housing units (micro-homes) using land secured for a future road widening and realignment project. The housing units provide a bridge from homelessness to a permanent home. For more information, visit durham.ca/newsroom.
