Region responds to verdict in Derek Chauvin murder trial
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer; and Elaine Baxter-Trahair, Chief Administrative Officer:
“Today, the jury reached its verdict in murder trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin: guilty on all counts, in the murder of George Floyd.
We need to continue to stand together. We need to continue the momentum of this day to keep pushing forward to disrupt anti-Black racism, against social injustice and strive for equity for all; even though this is yet another painful reminder of the bias and racism that still exists in our society.
In Durham Region, Black lives matter. We remain united in solidarity, with our Black community members, to create meaningful change.
We need to address social injustice.
We need to stand for equality.
We need to ensure a better tomorrow for residents who call Durham Region home.
This is our collective responsibility. We all must join the conversation if we are to better understand one another.
We need to keep moving forward in our fight against anti-Black racism. Acknowledging our mistakes and keep challenging ourselves to do better. We need more than statements or strong words. We need action; an ongoing commitment to standing up for and doing what is right. To have the strength to stand up to change what is wrong. To work with those around us to develop real solutions.
No form of racism is acceptable. While these discussions aren’t comfortable, silence is no longer an option.”
