Regional Chair Henry on acknowledging Emancipation Day
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“It is with great honour that I acknowledge August 1 as Emancipation Day. It marks the day when the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 came into effect, ending the slavery of people of African descent in Canada.
While the abolition of slavery may have ended physical enslavement, it did not prevent or protect Black people from continued exploitation by many oppressive systems.
That is why Emancipation Day is also a day to come together to reflect and learn with the intention to build relationships and ignite a passion resulting in real action in the ongoing fight against anti-Black racism and discrimination.
It gives us an opportunity to reflect on the significance of Emancipation, not just to people of African descent, but to all Canadians. It’s an opportunity to take an active role in building a safe and brave community for current and future generations.
On Emancipation Day, I encourage all residents to take the time to learn, be engaged in and commit to the ongoing fight against anti-Black racism, discrimination and inequity.
In recognition of this day, the Pan-African flag will be raised at Durham Regional Headquarters.
In this spirit of learning and community, I invite you to join us in commemorating this important occasion on Saturday, August 6 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Durham Region Emancipation Day celebration. This celebration will include live performances, food vendors and activities for kids.
We cannot truly celebrate freedom without engaging in the difficult work that needs to be done to dismantle oppressive systems.”
The Region of Durham remains committed to this work through the establishment of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Division and Durham Region Anti-Racism Taskforce, as we recognize that there is much more important work ahead. Visit durham.ca/DEI for more information.
