Regional Chair proclaims Indigenous People’s Week in Durham Region
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“On behalf of Durham Regional Council, it is my pleasure to proclaim June 21 as National Indigenous Peoples Day, and the week of June 21 to 27 as Indigenous People’s Week in Durham Region.
These important dates honour the cultural diversity and contributions of the First Nations, Inuit and Metis people of Canada.
In Durham Region, we continue to build strong, respectful partnerships with our local Indigenous Peoples. Our region is located on land that has long served as a site of meeting and exchange among the Mississauga Peoples. It is the traditional and treaty territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.
We are all working together to create a more inclusive environment. Understanding that, while we may have our differences, everyone should be accepted for who they are.”
