Regional Chair recognizes Earth Day
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“April 22 is Earth Day—a time to celebrate our beautiful Earth and drive another year of energy, enthusiasm and commitment to protecting and enhancing Durham’s natural environments, as they play a critical role in our resilience to climate change.
Through the Durham Community Energy Plan and the Community Climate Adaptation Plan, the Region is committed to creating a cleaner energy economy. These plans provide a low carbon pathway to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and outline a strategy to build resiliency to our changing climate.
As the Clean Energy Capital of Canada, Durham Region is committed to supporting clean energy innovation and the evolution of our business ecosystem, ensuring that businesses in Durham can innovate for good.
The Long-term Waste Management Plan guides the Region in developing innovative ways to use waste as a resource through the vision of a circular economy, while demonstrating leadership in sustainability and mitigating environmental impacts.
Our vision is to build more resilient infrastructures, communities and natural systems to reduce the impacts of climate change; to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; to strive to be a carbon neutral community; and to create a circular economy where nothing is wasted.
In support of Earth Day and the Region’s commitment to a green Durham, we’re lighting Regional Headquarters in green this weekend.”
