Regional Chair statement in response to attacks in the Middle East
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“I am deeply distressed by the horrific attacks that took place in Israel over the weekend, leaving hundreds of civilians dead and thousands wounded.
While mounting tensions in the Middle East have long divided communities, I strongly condemn these horrific and fatal acts of violence. These attacks are reprehensible; a disregard for human life and violate the freedom to live free from fear.
It is understood that residents will be impacted differently based on their lived experiences and relationships with the Middle East. The Region of Durham upholds human rights and strives to protect the humanity of every person so that they can experience peace and a sense of safety, wherever they are in the region.
On behalf of the Region of Durham and its residents, I would like to offer my deepest sympathy to all affected by this violence. Our thoughts are with victims, innocent civilians and Durham residents who may have loved ones back home.”
