Regional Chair statement on the passing of Constable Rick O’Brien
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“On behalf of the Region of Durham and our residents, I would like to offer my deepest condolences on the passing of Royal Canadian Mountain Police (RCMP) Constable Rick O’Brien. Constable O’Brien was killed in the line of duty on Friday as officers executed a search warrant in a private home in Coquitlam, British Columbia.
During this difficult time, our thoughts are with his family and friends; colleagues at the Ridge Meadows detachment, Coquitlam RCMP and the broader RCMP family, including two other RCMP officers who were injured, and are expected to make full recoveries.
Constable O’Brien joined the RCMP in 2016 and was commended for his involvement in rescuing several victims of a home invasion and arresting the suspects shortly after joining. He has been described as a father and husband who “led by example and had a great sense of humour.” He will live on through his family, friends and colleagues.
Flags at Regional Headquarters have been half-masted in his honour and will remain lowered until further notice.”
