Regional Chair statement on the passing of Hazel McCallion

Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:

“I was saddened to hear of the passing of Hazel McCallion over the weekend. Hazel was an extraordinary leader and a true public servant—serving the residents of Mississauga for 36 years as mayor and building up one of Canada’s largest cities throughout her tenure.

Hazel was widely recognized for her commitment to community growth, building a strong economy in the city she served while transforming Mississauga into a city where people could live and work. Even after her tenure as mayor, she continued to work in the community.

On behalf of the Region of Durham and our residents, I’d like to offer my condolences to Hazel’s family during this difficult time. She will be remembered dearly by the many people that she touched throughout her life.”
