Regional Chair statement on the passing of Michael Ferdinand

Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:

“On behalf of the Region of Durham and its residents, I would like to offer my deepest condolences on the passing of Michael Ferdinand, a security guard at Pickering Casino Resort, who was tragically killed in a shooting over the weekend.

In the early hours of Monday (October 9), Michael was on shift when an armed person arrived at the casino, leaving him in life-threatening condition as a result from gunshot wounds. Sadly, he later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

During this difficult time, our thoughts are with Michael’s family and friends; as well as his colleagues at Pickering Casino Resort.

Durham Regional Police Services is conducting an investigation and encourages anyone with information to contact investigators.”
