Regional Chair statement on the passing of the Honourable David Onley
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“On behalf of the Region of Durham and our residents, I’d like to offer my deepest condolences on the passing of Ontario’s 28th Lieutenant Governor, the Honourable David Onley. Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.
Mr. Onley was a strong advocate for accessibility throughout his career—raising public awareness and support for people of all abilities. His dedication to breaking down accessibility barriers and his commitment to public service will leave a lasting legacy in the Province of Ontario.
Among his many accomplishments, Mr. Onley was instrumental in the passing of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act in 2005—a law which continues to guide accessibility standards across the province.
Throughout his career, Mr. Onley also worked towards expanding reconciliation efforts with Indigenous peoples by building upon existing educational programs and highlighting the importance of developing open dialogue.
Flags at Regional facilities have been half-masted in his memory.”
