Reuse Days earns Environmental Achievement Award

Whitby, Ontario – The Regional Municipality of Durham, Works Department is pleased to congratulate its partner Habitat for Humanity Durham for receiving the Jessica Markland Partnership Award at this year’s Durham Environmental Advisory Committee (DEAC)’s prestigious Environmental Achievement Awards.

Habitat for Humanity Durham earned the award for being the lead agency, partnering with local charities and the Region of Durham Waste Management Branch, on the “Reuse Days – Pass it On” initiative.

“We’d like to congratulate our partners at Habitat for Humanity Durham on receiving the Jessica Markland Partnership Award for their efforts in leading the highly successful Reuse Days program,” says Susan Siopis, Commissioner of Works. “We are proud to be involved with such a worthy effort to support local charities, with the added bonus of diverting unwanted items from the waste stream.”

Reuse Days is a program to help divert quality, reusable items from the waste stream, including: clothing, textiles, furniture, appliances, cabinets, countertops and most other reusable renovation materials. At Reuse Days, Habitat for Humanity Durham works with Diabetes Canada,  the Salvation Army Thrift Store and the Region of Durham to accept all good-quality, reusable household items and building materials at the Durham Region Waste Management Centre in Whitby.

The Durham Environmental Advisory Committee’s (DEAC) prestigious 2017 Environmental Achievement Awards were handed out last night, during a special ceremony at The Regional Municipality of Durham Headquarters in Whitby.
