Seasonal leaf and yard waste collection resumes

Whitby, Ontario – The Regional Municipality of Durham advises residents that seasonal leaf and yard waste collection is starting in the townships of Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge, the City of Pickering, the Town of Ajax and the Municipality of Clarington.

When: Leaf and yard waste collection will resume bi-weekly on regular waste collection days starting on the following weeks:

• Town of Ajax – week of April 5
• Municipality of Clarington – week of April 5
• Townships of Brock, Uxbridge and Scugog – week of April 12
• City of Pickering – week of April 12

Residents should check their collection calendar, visit durham.ca/Waste or download the Durham Region Waste App to see their specific collection days and collection frequency in their community.

Where: Collection takes place in the Town of Ajax, Municipality of Clarington, City of Pickering, and the townships of Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge.

Leaf and yard waste collection for Oshawa and Whitby is the responsibility of those individual municipalities, not the Region of Durham. These residents are asked to check their waste calendars, or contact their local municipality, regarding the collection of leaf and yard waste.

Why: The leaf and yard waste and green bin organics collected through the Region's residential curbside collection program is taken to a processing facility and turned into high-quality compost. The Region gives a portion of this finished compost back to the area municipalities at their annual spring compost give-away events or for use in community gardens and parks.

Note: Please utilize your free curbside collection service and follow these requirements when setting out your leaf and yard waste:

• Only use paper yard waste bags or clearly labelled rigid open-top reusable containers.
• We do not pick-up leaf and yard waste in cardboard boxes, blue boxes, green bins or plastic bags.
• If you are using a reusable open-top container, drill holes in the bottom for drainage.
• Securely tie brush in bundles up to one metre (three feet) in length and 76 centimetres (30 inches) in width, weighing no more than 20 kilograms (44 pounds).
• Brush and tree trimmings must be 10 centimetres (four inches) or less in diameter.
