Statement by Regional Chair John Henry on the Port of Oshawa expansion
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer:
“Yesterday, the Government of Canada announced a significant investment of $13.85 million for an expansion project at the Port of Oshawa to modernize its operations. This investment will increase import and export capacity in and out of Ontario through the Port of Oshawa, helping to strengthen Canada’s supply chain and trade corridors. With a $16 million dollar contribution from the Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority, the total investment represents almost $30 million.
I am so pleased with this announcement and the federal government’s commitment to infrastructure investment that will help position the Port of Oshawa for growth. This is wonderful news for both the City of Oshawa and Durham Region. This will strengthen our economy through a more streamlined movement of goods, increased exports from our region and local job creation within our communities.
This investment will also have significant positive impact on the region’s local agri-food businesses. In addition to road, utility and storage facility upgrades, a new grain unloading station and new grain silo will give port access to hundreds local farmers in Durham Region. This will enable agri-food producers to reliably ship a higher volume of goods to national and international markets through the Port of Oshawa.
On behalf of the Region of Durham, I would like to extend a sincere thank you to the Government of Canada, Transport Canada’s National Trade Corridors Fund, and the Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority for this investment.”
