Statement by Regional Chair John Henry recognizing the 2023 Ontario Parasport Games organizers

“This past weekend (February 3 to 5), Durham Region hosted another successful Ontario Parasport Games. Community pride was front and centre as athletes competed to the roar of fans cheering loud and proud in the stands.

Our mission was to deliver the best Ontario Parasport Games yet and continue to grow opportunities and participation in accessible sport through legacy initiatives. It is through the commitment and tireless efforts of our Games Organizing Committee, community leaders, volunteers, partners, sponsors and Regional staff that we were able to achieve this. I am grateful for your shared vision of creating welcoming communities that provide equal opportunities for people of all abilities.

I would like to recognize Regional staff, who demonstrated strong leadership; securing both the 2019 and 2023 Ontario Parasport Games. The success of these Games is directly tied to several legacy initiatives, which have had profound positive impact on accessible sport in the region.

To the organizing committee, thank you for your unwavering dedication and commitment to accessible and inclusive sport in Durham Region. Your efforts ensured that these Games provided a welcoming, safe and friendly environment for athletes, their families and fans. You worked to make sure that everyone felt welcome and accepted.

And of course, these Games would not be possible without the athletes, coaches, trainers, medical staff and others, whose hard work, dedication and passion for sport drive our communities to host these Games. Congratulations to everyone who participated—and took home medals—at this year’s competition.
