Statement from Regional Chair in response to offensive flyers posted in Ajax
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“On behalf of Durham Region and its residents, I am angered by the distribution of disturbing flyers that were found in multiple schools and neighbourhoods in Ajax.
The Durham Regional Police Service has laid harassment charges related to this matter stating the flyers were created as an act of revenge and included phone numbers of two unknowing female students, hoping to incite a negative response from the community.
These posters contained offensive and hateful messages towards Black residents. In Durham Region, we have zero tolerance for this type of behaviour; harassment, racism and hate have no place in our communities.
We strive to create welcoming, equitable and inclusive communities to ensure all residents feel safe and supported; building a better tomorrow for those who call Durham Region home.
I offer my deepest sympathies to all individuals who have been impacted by the malicious messaging and illustrations found on these flyers.
We take an unequivocal stand against all forms of racism, wherever it occurs.”
