Statement from Regional Chair John Henry on AMO Conference
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“This week, Durham Region is proud to be participating in the virtual Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) Conference, from August 15 to 18.
This annual event is an important opportunity to network with provincial Ministers about local issues and advocate for our key priorities. It also gives us the opportunity to connect with, and learn from, municipalities across Ontario as we face the same challenges and work towards recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year we are showcasing the innovative programs that are helping to achieve our goal to end homelessness in Durham Region. Using a co-ordinated system that streamlines access to available supports, we helped more than 100 people find housing in 2020 and we are on track to exceed that in 2021.
Other priorities include the continued importance of long-term care, the need for continued investment in transit infrastructure with initiatives such as the On Demand Transit model, ensuring the continued progress towards the Lakeshore GO East Extension, and highlighting the success of both the Primary Care Outreach Program and Durham Region Human Trafficking Coalition.
By working together with our fellow municipalities, we’ll be able to serve our communities better, and make Durham Region a better place for everyone.”
