Statement from Regional Chair on Canada Day 2023

Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:

“This Saturday (July 1), people across the country will recognize Canada Day. This day is an opportunity for us to reflect on the rich diversity of this country, and to reflect on the past, present as well as the future we aspire for.

Durham Region continues to move forward with reconciliation to address the inequities that Indigenous communities continue to face. This Canada day, let us work to build a better future for all; a future that celebrates Indigenous culture and diversity, embraces kindness, and values each and every person for who they are.

I encourage everyone to think about the land on which we live and work. Let us reflect on whose territory we are standing on, what treaties govern this land, and how we can actively and respectfully engage in the reconciliation journey.
