Stop and look: Ensuring safety at Durham's intersections
Whitby, Ontario – A simple pause can save a life. Durham Region urges drivers to come to a complete stop at stop signs and check both directions before moving forward. This small action is a crucial part of how Durham is working to create safer roads for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists through the Durham Vision Zero Strategic Road Safety Action Plan.
Where: Stop signs can be found at intersections throughout Durham Region.
Why: Drivers must look in both directions and check the sidewalk before proceeding. Cyclists and scooter riders can come quickly from either direction on multi-use paths, sidewalks, and roads. By ensuring the way is clear, we can all share the roads safely and protect each other. Drivers must remember to be aware of people crossing the street as well as the traffic on the road. At crossrides cyclists may cross without dismounting, as well as fast-moving e-bikes and scooters, so it is extremely important for drivers to ensure the sidewalk is clear before proceeding through a stop sign or traffic light.
Protect our community by stopping fully and checking for pedestrians and cyclists. Drivers must come to a complete stop for all stop signs and red traffic lights. Stop at the stop line if it is marked on the pavement; stop at the crosswalk if there is no stop line; stop at the edge of the sidewalk if there is no crosswalk; or stop at the edge of the intersection if there is no sidewalk. Wait until the way is clear before entering the intersection.
