Stop and look! Make sure the way is clear before proceeding through stop signs

Drivers are reminded to come to a complete stop at stop signs and make sure the road and sidewalk is clear in both directions before proceeding.
Drivers must be aware of people crossing the street as well as the traffic on the road. Crossrides allow cyclists to cross without dismounting, as well as e-bikes and scooters, so it is extremely important for drivers to ensure the sidewalk and roadway are clear before proceeding through a stop sign or traffic light. Bad weather or dark conditions can also make visibility difficult.
Stop at the stop line if it is marked on the pavement; stop at the crosswalk if there is no stop line; stop at the edge of the sidewalk if there is no crosswalk; or stop at the edge of the intersection if there is no sidewalk. Wait until the way is clear before entering the intersection.
Drivers must come to a complete stop at a stop sign to ensure:
- There are no pedestrians, cyclists, or riders on e-bikes or scooters crossing, or about to cross, the street.
- The way is clear of other vehicles to avoid a collision.
- No emergency vehicles are nearby or about to enter the intersection unexpectantly.
