Stories of Resilience video series aims to reduce stigma on World Homeless Day
Whitby, Ontario – Anyone can become homeless.
For Camilla, it was illness that led her to homelessness. For Jennifer and Michael, it was feeling unsafe in their housing situation that led them to leave. For Tiffany, it was escaping domestic violence. And for Jamie, it was by choice due to many complex factors.
In recognition of World Homeless Day on October 10, the Region of Durham is releasing “Stories of Resilience,” a video series about local homelessness. The series includes interviews with people experiencing homelessness, the stigma of being homeless, and the services and supports available to help.
The video series is available on YouTube at Stories of Resilience.
The Region of Durham has proclaimed October 10 as World Homeless Day, and a flag will be raised at Regional Headquarters, located at 605 Rossland Road East, Whitby.
According to Durham Region’s By-Name List, 786 people are experiencing homelessness, as of August 2024. The By-Name List is a list of people experiencing homelessness who consent to receiving supports.
The Region of Durham aims to help people end their homelessness. As the co-ordinator of the local Homelessness Support System, the Region of Durham provides shelter to help meet basic needs, while taking a housing-first approach with supports, services and strategies that lead to housing.
The Region remains committed to helping those experiencing homelessness across local municipalities. Shelter is a basic human need.
