The Region of Durham celebrates Asian Heritage Month
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
"Today (May 1), marks the beginning of Asian Heritage Month—a time to recognize the resilience of Asian communities and celebrate the positive impact they have, and continue to make, on the social, cultural and economic fabric of our society.
Asian Heritage Month offers everyone in Durham Region an opportunity to learn more about the history, heritage and cultural diversity of people of Asian descent.
It reminds us to reflect on the contributions that these diverse, vibrant and growing communities have made on so many aspects of life in Durham Region—from the arts and sciences to sport, business and government.
And it also provides an opportunity to reflect on systemic challenges and barriers that Asian communities continue to face. As a Region, we are committed to raising awareness about, and actively challenging all forms of racism, including anti-Asian racism. This May, and beyond, I encourage you to celebrate the history and positive contributions of Asian Canadians in our region, across Canada and around the world."
