The Region of Durham celebrates National AccessAbility Week
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“On Sunday (May 26), National AccessAbility Week will begin across the country. This week is an opportunity for Canadians to celebrate people of all abilities; recognize the individuals, organizations and communities that are working to remove barriers; and raise awareness of issues related to accessibility and inclusion.
People living with disabilities have diverse skills, experiences and innovative mindsets that bring substantial value to our communities and workplaces. They hold expertise and perspectives that are critical to ensuring a more accessible and inclusive future for all. It is our responsibility, as a region, to break down barriers to inclusion, champion equitable access and hold ourselves accountable to accessibility for all.
The Region is committed to ensuring accessibility is at our very core; that it is embedded into the work we do, within our corporation and in our communities. This work is driven by the Region’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Division and the Accessibility Advisory Committee—creating a pathway for opportunities for a society where everyone can participate fully.
This week and beyond, let us celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of people living with disabilities. Let us reflect on how individually, and collectively, we can remove and prevent barriers to accessibility to build a brighter future for all residents in Durham Region.
Durham Region has proclaimed May 26 to June 1 as National AccessAbility Week, and in recognition, the AccessAbility flag will be raised at Regional Headquarters from May 28 to June 4.”
