Together We Rise Durham: A Celebration of Black Achievements in Durham
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer:
“Today, it is my distinct honour to recognize the start of Black History Month in Durham Region. The theme this year is Together We Rise Durham: A Celebration of Black Achievements in Durham.
Black History Month is a time to celebrate the many achievements and contributions of Black Canadians and their communities. A time to honour the enormous contributions that Black people have made, and continue to make, in Canada. It’s about recognizing and celebrating resilience, innovation, and determination to work towards a more inclusive and diverse Canada.
Throughout history, Black Canadians have done so much to make Canada the culturally diverse, compassionate, and prosperous nation it is today. Durham Region residents have played a vital role in this story.
According to the last Canadian census, more than 51,000 Black people live in Durham Region, making up eight per cent of Durham’s total population; speaking more than 50 different languages. In fact, the Town of Ajax has the highest Black population of any major Canadian city.
Right here in Durham, there are many individuals and community organizations who are doing amazing and impactful work. We salute and celebrate these individuals and organizations. The Region is committed to not only recognizing the achievements of Black Canadians during this month, but all year round.
Let’s all take this time to reflect, learn and come together for an enlightening and educational Black History Month.”
