We want your input! Use of Accessible Taxi Survey
Whitby, Ontario – Municipalities, across Durham Region, have received input about a shortage of accessible taxis. This situation can make it difficult for some people to travel to medical appointments, to visit family/friends, and/or to participate in events outside their home.
The Region of Durham is committed to ensuring accessible services and programs to all residents and visitors to our region. All Durham Region Transit (DRT) buses are low floor with a front ramp to support customers using mobility devices, as well as other accessibility features required by the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). People with disabilities who are unable to use the conventional service may be eligible for DRT Specialized services delivered through the On Demand service. DRT bus services cannot meet the needs of everyone, and in these situations, accessible taxis are more appropriate to meet the client’s needs.
Your local Accessibility Co-ordinators—from the Region and the eight area municipalities—have been working together to brainstorm solutions.
To help understand our specific community need, we are asking for your valuable input, via an accessible taxi survey.
When: Survey is open September 10 through October 31, 2024.
Where: The survey is available online at durham.ca/AccessibleTaxiSurvey. This survey is also available in different formats and can be requested by emailing accessibility@durham.ca.
Residents can also get a copy of the survey from libraries and recreation centres located in their local area municipalities.
Why: Your feedback will be used to help identify service gaps, while also helping to shape a solution. Together, we are helping to build the Durham Region of tomorrow.
